Shot Without Permission

Amstel|INGO Amsterdam & Ogilvy Amsterdam|2026

Advertising has trained us to perform connection for the camera — and audiences know it. Amstel's brief to photographer Javier Tles was structurally designed to make that performance impossible: capture the moment first, ask permission after. Shot Without Permission turns a methodological choice into the entire creative argument. Real people, unposed, mid-laugh, mid-argument, mid-nothing-in-particular, in the kind of neighborhood bars that don't make it onto Instagram. The consent happens afterward — which means the images contain something a briefed shoot can never manufacture: the face someone makes when nobody's watching. The campaign earns its authenticity claim because the process guarantees it, not because the creative team said so in a manifesto. Strategically, this sits against a data point Amstel surfaced: 68% of people identify friendship as the primary context in which they feel genuinely themselves. That's not a beer insight — it's a human one, and Amstel is smart enough to let it do the heavy lifting without over-branding it. What separates this from the wave of 'real people, real moments' campaigns flooding the category is that the methodology creates a verifiable proof gap. You can fake a candid photo. You cannot fake the process of not taking one on purpose.

68% of survey respondents see friendships as key enablers of being their true, authentic selves
